A Commercial Dial-up account with DSI entitles you to 10Mb of disk space on our web server for your business' website. When your page is ready for uploading, let us know by calling 212-6771 or via email to techs@webdsi.com so that we can establish your directory. We will email you instructions on how to ftp into the server (which can also be found at the bottom of this page). The URLs of these types of pages will be in the following format: http://www.webdsi.com/your_username For users who have never worked with HTML, it can be somewhat confusing at first. Below are some links and information to get you started: What is HTML? HTML (Hyper-Text Markup Language) is the language in which web pages are written. It consists of tags which tell the browser how to display your information on the page. There are many resources available to the new user, both on the Web (A Beginner's Guide to HTML is a good place to start), and in any good bookstore. To see HTML in action, you can view the source code of any page on the Web. To do this, click on View from your browser's file bar and choose Source (or View Source). This will show you the HTML code behind the current web page. As you learn what the tags mean, you will begin to understand how they affect the layout of information on the page. It is also possible to save the HTML code of any page and use it as a template for your own (you would simply have to change the information on the page while leaving the tag structure in place). HTML Editors It is possible for HTML to be written in Notepad or any other text editor, but there are many programs written specifically for working with HTML available on the Web. Most of these, however, do require some knowledge of HTML to use. Any good shareware or download site should have many listings for HTML editors. A good place to start would be TUCOWS. For the complete novice, there are WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editors that require no knowledge of HTML to use. They operate in much the same way as a word processing program with the ability to insert graphics, choose font color, etc. Netscape Communicator and Internet Explorer both include these types of editors for building web pages. Netscape's HTML component is called Composer and Internet Explorer's is called FrontPage Express. FTP FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is the process you will use to transfer your HTML files, graphic files, etc. to our server. There are a number of FTP programs available on the Web (we recommend WS_FTP). When your pages are ready for uploading, let us know and we will E-Mail individual FTP instructions for your directory. Using your username and password, FTP your HTML and graphics files to the web server using an FTP program of your choice (another popular FTP client is Cute FTP). The host server name or IP address is: The first page that you would like seen when entering your URL must be named index.html. |
