Verify that Dial-up
Networking is Installed
Press the Start button, select
Settings..., then Control
Panel.
Double-click the Add/Remove Programs
icon.
Select the Windows Setup tab, click on
Communications and press
Details....
Make sure that the Dial-up Networking
option is selected.(checkmark)
If it isn't, select it and click OK.
Windows 95 will attempt to install the needed
drivers,
Make sure you have
the Win95 diskettes or CD
available
Verify that the
Client for Microsoft Network, Dial-up Adapter
and TCP/IP Protocol are Installed
Press the start button, select
Settings..., then Control
Panel.
Double-click the Network icon. You'll see
the Network dialog box.
Make sure the Configuration tab is
selected. If Client for Microsoft Network,
Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP are
present, Configure these Network Components.
Otherwise:

To add Client for Microsoft
Networks:
-
hit the Add... button, double-click
Client, then scroll down the list of
manufacturers until you can highlight
Microsoft. Choose the Client for
Microsoft Network from the list on the
right hand side and hit OK.

To add Dial-Up
Adapter:
-
hit the Add... button, double-click
Adapter, then scroll down the list
of manufacturers until you can highlight
Microsoft. Choose the Dial-Up
Adapter from the list on the right hand
side and hit OK.

To install TCP/IP:
-
hit the Add... button, double-click
Protocol, then select
Microsoft, then TCP/IP, and
hit OK.
Now the Network dialog
box should contain Client for Microsoft
Networks, Dial-Up Adapter and
TCP/IP. (You may also see IPX/SPX
and/or NetBEUI... these may be removed if you are
NOT connected to a network of computers, ie...
your office) Click on the
"Identification" tab... Enter
your Name in the "Computer Name"
field and your initials in the
"Workgroup"field. Click
OK on the Network dialog box. If any
changes are made, Windows will prompt for a
re-boot of the computer, for the changes to take
effect. If further configuration or
troubleshooting is needed you may postpone the
re-boot for now. (Remember, you MUST
re-boot before trying to connect.)
Set up the Connection
Icon

Click on My Computer from the
desktop then double-click the Dial-Up
Networking icon.

Double-click the Make New Connection
icon.

Type in "DSI Internet" (this labels
your icon) The modem should be shown
in the "Select a modem" box. Click
the Next button.

Enter the phone number you use to connect
to DSI Internet.

Click "Next" and Press the Finish
button and confirm the creation of your new
Icon.
Setting the Dial-Up Properties of The
Connnection Icon
Right-click on the DSI Internet Icon and choose
Properties...
You should get the Connection's general
dialog box.
Make sure that "Use area code and country code"
is not selected.
Check that the correct Modem is shown.
Press the Configure button and you'll get
a dialog box. In the General section,
Select the highest speed you can connect at
(choose 57600 for 28,800 modems...115200 for 33.6
or 56K modems). * DO
NOT select "Only connect at this
speed".
Optional Init String Settings for off brand
modems:
(used when a particular brand modem
does not communicate properly)

Under the Connection section click
on the "Advanced" button
-
In the "Extra Settings" field type &F1
Click the Server Type... button or tab
(depending on the version of Windows 95 that you
have), which will bring up the Server
Types dialog box.
In the Type of Dial-Up Server section,
choose PPP:Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5,
Internet
Under Advanced options:
Enable Software compression should be
the only option checked
Under Allowed network protocols:
TCP/IP should be the only option
checked.
Click on the TCP/IP Settings
button.
Server assigned IP address and
Specify name server addresses
should both be checked.
Enter the following information:
Primary DNS: 206.40.224.2
Secondary DNS:
157.30.180.7
Primary and Secondary WINS should be left
blank.
Be sure that both Use IP header
compression and Use default
gateway on remote network are
checked.
Click OK until you return to
the main Dial-Up Networking Window. You are now
ready to connect.
You may wish to create a shortcut to the DSI
Internet dial-up icon. To do this, simply press
and hold the mouse button when the pointer is on
the icon then "drag" the DSI Internet icon out of
the Dial-Up Networking window and onto your
colored "desktop" area. A message will appear
stating "You cannot move or copy this
item, do you wish to create a
shortcut?" Answer
Yes and a shortcut will appear
on your desktop.
Dialing in and
Getting Connected
Double-click your DSI Internet icon. The
Connect To window will appear. Enter your
username and password
in the appropriate boxes.
Press the Connect button The modem should
dial, the status window will say,
Verifying user name and
password, then Logging
onto network, and finally
"connected to the DSI Internet"
along with the speed of the connection and a
timer tracking your time on-line. At this point
you are connected and may minimize the window and
start your Internet software.
